I will talk about:
(1) How we have made tremendous progress on the 3 R’s of computer vision: Recognition, Reorganization and Reconstruction
(2) How rich perception, not just vision but also touch, coupled with learning is making meaningful progress on robotic manipulation and navigation
(3) How “high-level cognition” grounded in sensorimotor reality is still a distant dream, but one where “Turing’s Baby”, a research program inspired by insights from child development offers considerable promise.
Jitendra Malik is Arthur J. Chick Professor of EECS at UC Berkeley (formerly Department Chair), and Research Scientist Director at Facebook AI Research. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received the 2016 ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award, 2018 IJCAI Award for Research Excellence in AI, and the 2019 IEEE Computer Society’s Computer Pioneer Award for “leading role in developing Computer Vision into a thriving discipline through pioneering research, leadership, and mentorship”.
